Dr. Qais Al-Awqati is the Robert F. Loeb Professor of Medicine and Professor of Physiology and Cellular Biophysics at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. He obtained his medical degree in Baghdad Iraq and completed his training at Johns Hopkins and the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is presently the Editor in Chief of Kidney International as well as being the Deputy Editor of the Journal of Clinical Investigation. He served on the Editorial Boards of Science, the American Journal of Physiology: Renal Physiology and the American Journal of Physiology: Cell Physiology; and the Journal of Cell Biology. He was the Chairman of the Program Committee for the 2001 Joint meeting of the International and the American Societies of Nephrology. His research work centers on the development and function of the differentiated epithelial cells of the kidney such as those of the glomerulus and kidney tubule. He recently found that there are stem cells in the adult kidney that can repair damaged nephrons.
