There is no definite answer to this type of question, for how big and how permanent does the land mass need to be to be counted? The answer for the number will be in the tens of thousands, certainly more than 10 000 and almost certainly less than 100 000. Some islands will be destroyed by wave action etc, and others will be created by the movement of sediments by ocean currents. And volcanic activity will create new islands, maybe long lived, maybe temporary.
