The original time zone for India was determined in 1802, by The East India Company, from their base in Chennai (then Madras). The longitude, 80 deg 16 min puts the exact time as GMT + 5 hours 21 minutes and this was rounded to the nearest half hour. Following independence, the main observatory was moved to Shankargarh near Allahabad, which is located at longitude 82.5 deg E which puts it at GMT + 5:30 exactly.
