New York Times Co. v. United States was a Supreme Court case debating the constitutionality of government censure of newspapers. The decision reversed an executive order from President Nixon to force the New York Times to stop publication of the Pentagon Papers (a top-secret history of US Military involvement in Vietnam). The Court held the government could not use "prior restraint" without violating the First Amendment.
