In the cytoplasm, rRNA binds to the "start" codon of a mRNA molecule. Next, a tRNA molecule with the complimentary anticodon binds to the mRNA start codon and releases an amino acid. As the mRNA moves through the rRNA, new tRNA's come along and bind to the mRNA, adding a new amino acid each time. Eventually a "stop" codon is reached, and the rRNA, mRNA, and tRNA break apart, releasing a long chain of amino acids which will fold into a protein.

I believe the main idea behind Vowell's essay is that no matter how different you may seem from someone who is so close to you that there is usually always something that binds you to that person. It may take a while to see things from other peoples perspectives but when you finally realize there passion and why they love whatever it is they love you realize that you are exactly the same way and learn to respect and appreciate differences. Vowell failed to see the artistic side of her father's passion until actually participating in the shooting of the cannon that her father had made. And up until the hiker comments on her radio equipment she fails to realize that there goofy projects or passions were alike even though much different. They were both dedicated to their arts.
