In the Colonial Period, France and England fought over North America mainly for the sake of the wealth that could be gained by controlling the land in question. North American resources (such as furs and timber) were at stake, as were various trade routes both actual and potential. After numerous conflicts, England gradually gained control of the most significant areas in dispute.
