Guise is a small historic town in northern France. It was home of a powerful feudal family, the Dukes of Guise (who were also Dukes of Lorraine). The name 'de Guise' probably originally meant 'from Guise'.

The town's name itself comes from a passage (a Ford) on the local river.

The exact first movie probably can't be determined. One of the earliest scores written specifically for one movie was by the French composer, Camille Saint-Saëns. The movie was L'Assassinat du Duc de Guise, or The Assassination of the Duke de Guise, a French silent movie from 1908. The score was played by a live orchestra in the theater.
