I once asked a Mexican friend of mine about this distinction.

He told me that "frijoles" is the the general term used in Mexico for "beans".

And that "habichuelas" is the term used in Puerto Rico, and perhaps other LAtin American countries.

Can anyone who is actually from these areas help verify this?
