I'm not completely certain, but I think the term was coined by the French when they were trying to maintain their presence and influence in Mexico. I idea was that the French were closer culturally and linguistically with Mexico than the rest of the European powers, and the term "Latin America" was an attempt to put a blanket term over the area that would include France as a legitimate cousin of the former Spanish and Portugese colonies. why do you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? duh...
