Screening and sieving are important mineral processing operations. They rely on separation of particles according to their size. The difference between them is that screening is a continuous operation while sieving is a batch action and is usually performed as lab tests.

It is usually how they designate the size of the mesh wire used to make the sieve or screen.

· Sieve wire is usually of small diameter you can have 10 mesh sieve cloth that is Wire width of 0.9 mm, and with fine wires a lot of material will pass thru.

· But the same 10 mesh cloth being used as a screen will have wire 1.194 mm thickness, and the thicker wires will let less material pass thru.

So sieves are used for light duty fine separations with lots of volume and screens are used for heavy duty but lower volumes and last longer

In the milling machine, they probably pass it thru a larger mesh screen to get volume production and handle the weight of the milling wastes, and then they pass that material thru a sieve with a finer mesh to refine it better
