More movies have been made out of Shakespeare plays than out of the works of any other writer. The IMdb lists over 800 films based on Shakespeare's plays, from a silent short scene from King John made in 1899 to over ten films in production right now. Some plays like Hamlet have been done a lot; others have rarely been done at all. It would be impossible to list in this space even all of the films which use Shakespeare's dialogue, but here is a short list of notable films made in the last 25 years:
Hamlet: Mel Gibson, 1991; Ken Branagh 1996; David Tennant 2010
Macbeth: Patrick Stewart 2010
Romeo and Juliet: Baz Luhrmann, 1996
Coriolanus: Ralph Fiennes, 2011
Titus Andronicus: Julie Taymor and Anthony Hopkins, 1999
Henry V: Ken Branagh, 1989
Richard III: Ian McKellen, 1995
Much Ado About Nothing: Ken Branagh, 1993
The Tempest: Julie Taymor and Helen Mirren, 2011
Merchant of Venice: Al Pacino, 2005
Twelfth Night: Helena Bonham-Carter, 1995
Midsummer Night's Dream: Kevin Kline and Michelle Pfeiffer, 1999
