A stored program controlled system can have features and properties changed through programming...which can often be done in PBX systems remotely. Hardwired control requires physical changes to wiring, strapping, etcetera, which means it cannot be done remotely but needs to be done on site.

Using business telephone systems as an example: Until the 70's most business phone systems had their characteristics and features configured by physical wiring and electro mechanical switches (relays) and other components. It was not unusual for equipment rooms to be filled with racks of switching equipment. By the mid 70s as stored program controlled (specialised computerized) systems took over what had taken a full room of hardwired equipment could be held in a refrigerator sized cabinet...a few years later, in a cabinet the size of a 2 drawer file cabinet. Also the equipment did not need constant adjustments and cleaning.

Around 1980 I was a business phone system technician working out of a garage (work location where we stored our trucks and got supplies) with about 70 other technicians, and hardwired systems were rapidly being replaced. By 1986 there were only 2 or 3 technicians covering the same territory. Some were replaced by centralized remote techs maintaining systems via modem...but most had had their need vanish due to the efficiencies of configuring and maintaining the newer systems.

What is process control block in operating system?

All of the information needed to keep track of a process when switching is kept in a data package called process control block.s A PCB is a data structure in the operating system kernel containing the information needed to manage a particular process. The PCB is the manifestation of a process in an operating system,

What is the difference between PCB and TCB in Operating System?

PCB stands for Process Control Block, and TCB stands for Task Context Buffer. Both of them represent a buffer/array which stores values holded by various registers like Stack Pointer(SP), Program Counter(PC), and other variables while task switching takes place.

What is the operating principle of thyromat control system for cranes?

The THYROMAT is connected in series with the stator supply voltage. The control unit varies the stator voltage of the slip-ring motor by adjusting the firing angle of the inversely connected (parallel) thyristors in each of the three phases. The motor torque is proportional to the square of the stator voltage (T a V2 - where T is the motor torque and V is the stator voltage). The speed of the motor is measured by the frequency of the rotor. Reversing the direction of motor rotation is achieved by switching externally mounted reversing contactors at zero current.

3 Explain the flaw in the following logic Packet switching requires control and address bits to be added to each packet This causes considerable overhead in packet switching In circuit switching?

In circuit switching there is also some required overhead; the overhead in packet switching is usually a small percentage of the total traffic; and in any case, the benefits of packet switching far outweigh any disadvantage of some minor overhead.
