According to Professor Peter Saccio, Shakespeare viewed love in two ways. First, it is the most awesome experience you can have, a truly life-changing experience. But secondly, it also makes you behave in a very silly way.

In the comedies, love has a tendency to conquer all barriers. Women disguise themselves as men and go searching for their lovers, driven by love (in As You Like It and The Two Gentlemen of Verona). Arranged marriages are thwarted by love (In The Merry Wives of Windsor and A Midsummer Night's Dream).

The silly behaviour is seen in Love's Labour's Lost, Twelfth Night and A Midsummer Night's Dream especially.

If love cannot conquer all, if other forces overwhelm it, then it is a tragedy and leads to some of Shakespeare's most heartbreaking plays: Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, Troilus and Cressida and Othello.
