It is not clear where Shakespeare's earliest plays were performed, although it would appear that Titus Andronicus and Henry VI were played at the Rose. From 1594 to his retirement his plays were played at the Theatre, Curtain, Globe and Blackfriars Theatres. After the Restoration in 1660 only two theatres were licenced to perform his plays for many years: Drury Lane and Covent Garden. After the monopoly was lifted, Shakespeare's plays have been performed in thousands of theatres around the world. Some of the more famous are the Old Vic, the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon and the Festival Theatre in Stratford Ontario.
