Romeo tries to prevent Mercutio and Tybalt from fighting by stepping between them. Mercutio gets distracted by Romeo and this gives Tybalt a chance to stab Mercutio. By trying to keep the peace, Romeo accidentally causes the death of his best friend.

His curse 'o both your houses' sparks the play's decent from romance to tragedy.

His death causes Romeo to become wildly vengeful and kill tybalt, which in turn leads to his banishment and Juliet's fake suicide and, of course, the death of the lovers.

He convinces Romeo to go to the party where he meets juliet. Otherwise, he would not have been invited, and still be chasing the 'chaste' rosaline.

At least in part. Tybalt was not looking for a fight with Mercutio. Mercutio actively picked a fight with him. It was his fault that he was in the fight in the first place. Maybe he might not have been stabbed had Romeo not intervened, but there is no guarantee of that. There is a guarantee that he would not have been stabbed had he never fought Tybalt in the first place.
