Yes, but Claudius won't allow it: "As for your intent to return to school in Wittenberg, it is most retrograde to our desire."

What does the king tell Hamlet after he sends cornelius and voltimand to Norway?

Claudius deals with Laertes first, before turning to Hamlet. He asks why he is still depressed. Hamlet, after a discussion with the Queen, makes a speech about how genuine his grief is. Claudius then tells him that he is mourning too much and should stop, that he is the heir to the throne, and that he won't be leaving Denmark to go back to university.

What is the storyline to Hamlet?

Hamlet is the son of King Hamlet and Queen Gertrude of Denmark, but his father has recently died and his uncle Claudius has become king and married Queen Gertrude. Hamlet is taken to a battlement where the ghost of his father appears and tells him that he was murdered by Claudius and commands Hamlet to revenge him by killing Claudius. Hamlet decides to act crazy while looking for a chance to get at the king. His crazy behaviour induces the king to set spies on him, first his school pals Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and later his girlfriend Ophelia. Hamlet, still unsure of the ghost's veracity, gets some travelling players to put on a play which mimics the murder. Claudius's reactions confirm he is the murderer all right. Hamlet then has a chance to kill him, but holds his hand because he is praying. He then visits his mother in her room and kills the king's advisor who is also his girlfriend's father and who was spying on him for the king. The king then sends him to England to get him out of the way with instructions to the English to kill him. The death of her father drives Ophelia crazy and she drowns. Her brother arrives, desperate for revenge. Hamlet's ship gets attacked by pirates and he ends up back in England. Ophelia's brother Laertes and the king plot to kill Hamlet by staging a fencing match in which Laertes will have a poisoned sharp sword, and Claudius will give Hamlet a poisoned drink. But it all backfires. Hamlet gets hold of the poisoned sword after Laertes cuts him with it and kills Laertes. Gertrude drinks the poisoned drink and dies. Hamlet stabs Claudius and gives him the remains of the poisoned drink and then dies himself in the arms of his best friend Horatio.

What happened to Hamlet on the ship?

The incident in which Hamlet gets off the ship to England plays an important role in changing the entire plot. As he was being "escorted" to England by Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, he switches the letter that the King had given with the one he writes. The original message that the King had wanted to pass on contained an order to kill Hamlet in England. However, Hamlet switches the letter with a new one which orders for Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to be executed. After this, a pirate ship attacks the ship that Hamlet was on. We are not given much detail on such an occurrence but we find out that Hamlet got onto the pirate's ship as the pirates were attacking the ship that was supposed to take Hamlet to England. Shakespeare does this in order to bring Hamlet back to Denmark and resume the plot. Although, the literary merit behind such a plot manipulation is widely debated as being either acceptable or flagrantly unacceptable.

Why has Shakespeare made the choice for the Ghost to be seen and heard only by Hamlet?

He did not. The ghost is only heard by Hamlet but Bernardo, Marcellus and Horatio see it. This is a clue to us that the ghost is not just a figment of Hamlet's imagination. Gertrude, however, cannot see or hear the ghost even when it is present in the same room. This suggests that the ghost can appear to anyone if that suits its purpose; it is important to be seen by the guards so they will bring it to Hamlet's attention, but also important that he not be seen to be involved by his widow. But the real reason, as ever in a Shakespeare play, is dramatic. The scenes where the ghost appears to the guards is a dramatic scene good for opening the play, and the fact that they have seen the ghost allows for a number of wonderful scenes: Horatio's description of the ghost in 1,2, the attempts by Horatio to hold Hamlet back in 1,3, and Hamlet's insistence that they swear an oath of secrecy. All of this would be lost if the Ghost was visible only to Hamlet. But in Act 3, the scene is between Hamlet and Gertrude, and the ghost is a minor distraction. Having him appear to Gertrude would necessitate some kind of confrontation between them, and the scene would become one between Gertrude and the Ghost and Hamlet would be superfluous. Since such a scene is not necessary to the plot (Hamlet will convince Gertrude of Claudius's guilt without the help of the ghost), Shakespeare wisely avoided it.

At the end of Hamlet does Horatio become king?

No, Fortinbras does as declared by Hamlet and Fortinbras. Fortinbras is on his way back from Poland and is expecting to see the king and say that Rosencrantz and Guildenstern were executed, but instead he sees everyone dead and says it is his right to be king. Fortinbras then orders a funeral for Hamlet.
