The play Romeo and Juliet was written in the Elizabethan Era, the late sixteenth century. When first performed, the costuming was also Elizabethan, as we know that even plays supposed to be set in ancient Rome were costumed as Elizabethan. Nothing in the text suggests any other time period. In the nineteeth century, however, a custom arose of costuming this play in a sort of fourteenth century way, which has proved very persistent. Only late in the twentieth century do we see productions with alternative setting and costuming styles.
It is believed Romeo and Juliet was written some time between 1594 and 1595.
