When I taught my poetry unit, I started by having Green Day's "Good Riddance" playing when students first entered the room. When we started discussing imagery in verse, I played Train's "Drops of Jupiter." I used a variety of different Bob Dillon songs, I even encouraged students to bring in examples of the music they enjoyed, provided it contain no profanity or hateful lyrics.
There are lots of good songs to analyze! Every song has meaning, it just depends on the depth. More modern songs to analyze can be found in Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Fray, ect. Classics would include the Johnny Cash and The Beatles. I am also doing a similar project. Personally I like Ed Sheeran and Of Monsters and Men.
Hope this helped.
Good luck!
