Here are some ideas on starting an essay:

1. Set up your conclusion by asking a question you expect the conclusion to answer. E.g. "Why does Friar Lawrence send his message through Father John instead of Balthazar?"
2. Define some key terms you expect to use. E.g. "What is an apothecary? Actually it is the same as a pharmacist."
3. Describe an aspect of the plot which shows where your essay will be focussed. E.g. "Friar Lawrence is essential to the plot yet we do not meet him until Act 2"
4. Make an apparently startling statement which will be reflected in your conclusion. E.g. "The feud in Romeo and Juliet is maintained primarily by neither Capulets nor Montagues."
5. Start with a joke. E.g. "In the balcony scene, Juliet says goodbye to Romeo over and over again and yet they do not leave each other. You could say it's much adieu about nothing."

As you have probably been told, the easiest way to write an essay is to have a good idea what your conclusion is going to be before you start. Then you can direct the flow of the essay toward that conclusion.
