People kept well entertained in the Elizabethan era. Outside the home there were plays, of course, in the numerous London theatres and performed by travelling companies. Surprisingly many people considered going to church very entertaining, and would choose preachers who would preach for hours on end.
Although there were professional musicians who played at the theatres and for the rich, most people made their own music. In particular, people would entertain themselves by singing catches or rounds, or madrigals or other part songs.
Sports were not played professionally, but there were frequent opportunities for amateur competitions in Wrestling, boxing, running and Archery. Bowling was a popular pastime, both with a jack and with pins.
Board Games such as chess or nine men's Morris as well as card games were popular.
And of course there was the old standby, going down to the pub and getting drunk, possibly in the company of some people of questionable virtue. It was popular then and it's still going strong. For people of more refinement, a similar good time could be had by attending the celebrations of marriages and holidays.
