Old age and vibration, I'd guess. All of mine were out too. The Pontiac on the trunk lid wouldn't light up. I replaced the bulbs and now it does. For what it's worth, it's Way Cool when the PONTIAC does light up!
There are separate flasher relays for the hazard lights and turn signals. The flasher relay may be out on your blinkers. The relay for the hazards is behing the fuse box. The relay for the blinkers is behind the lower dash panel to the right of the steering column.

it's part of the atmosphere of the event. dimming the lights (1) lets everyone know the performance is about to begin, (2) focuses attention of the stage (which is well-lit), and (3) hides distractions that might be caused by the people sitting around you.

check if your battery is low than usual ..might be alternator problem
You might be able to get one through a dealership, but I'll bet they're danged expensive. I'd check with local junkyards.
Pontiac didn't make the Sunfire until '95. So, either you have the year of your car wrong, or it might be a Sunbird. If you can clarify this for us, we can help you.
You might have bad piston rings, main cause of that because once you wear your rings out your gas is then able to seep past your piston rings into your oil and into your pan.
check your coil it could be warming up and expanding inside might be internal crack
I hang out in a couple of Sunfire groups and have never heard of a V6 swap. I guess it might be "possible", but it may or may not be worth what it takes to get it done. I've wished for a long time, that Pontiac had offered a 6 cylinder engine for Sunfires.
Most likely in the front? Might be covered by a plastic cover so you'll have to take that off to get at it.
It might be the high/low beam switch. Had to replace one on my '96 when I had only low beams.
A good auto audio shop can fabricate one for you. Or, you might try Crutchfield.com
Did the old radio have any sound? Do you get a strange code on the radio display indicating that you are locked out? You might have to pull the radio back out and make sure that the speaker connection plug is plugged in securely.
Check under the hood for an obvious fuel leak. You might an injector leaking.
check the reference book or computer at your local parts store. You might find it listed on the parts houses' websites.
