Nobody knows how long it took Shakespeare to write any of his plays. All we know is that they had to have been written before people said they saw them in the theatre, or they were licenced for performance, or they were published in book form.
Nobody knows this. We do not even know when it was written (except that it must have been before 1597 when it was published). Shakespeare did not keep a diary. He was probably too busy.

Depending upon whether you are seeing a play or a movie of it, it can last anywhere from an hour and a half to two hours and fifteen minutes. Acting the whole uncut script as set out in the second Quarto or Folio takes closer to three hours.

Shakespeare wrote it, but it doesn't stop actors from over-acting it. :)

The runtime of Romeo and Juliet is between an hour and three quarters and three hours if it is played uncut. The phrase in the prologue "is now the two hours' traffic of our stage" suggests that the version we have is a little longer than what was actually played in Shakespeare's day. The First Quarto (sometimes called the Bad Quarto) of 1597 has a runtime closer to two hours, and may be based on an actual cut-down performance script.

The line in the prologue "is now the two hours' traffic of our stage" suggests that the plays ran for about two hours. Since many of Shakespeare's plays take three or more hours as a rule, some people have concluded that in actual performance many of the lines in the script were cut, and that the short "bad" Quartos of Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet may not be as bad as all that, and may more accurately reflect the scripts that the actors actually played from.

For some characters, like Romeo, Juliet and Paris, they only lived to Act 5. Mercutio by comparison died prematurely, in Act 3.
