It was a turbulent time, full of contrasts. There was a huge difference between the wealthy elite and the poor and working classes. About 2.5% of the adult male population (mostly from the upper classes but not all--Christopher Marlowe, a shoemaker's son, got a scholarship to attend Cambridge) were not only literate but university educated, more than at any other time before 1900. The working classes and primarily the women were mostly illiterate. The traditional ruling classes, the landed gentry, were being challenged for power and authority by the newer merchant classes. New ideas challenged and occasionally coexisted with old ones. Renaissance rationalism and medieval superstition were both present and hotly debated. Puritan religion and Catholicism both struggled for power.

In Act 1 of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar," when Casca refers to "portentous things" in relation to the climate, he is expressing his belief that strange occurrences in nature, such as unusual weather and unnatural phenomena, are omens that signify impending trouble or disaster. This reflects the play's theme of fate versus free will, suggesting that the natural world is reacting to the political turmoil in Rome. Casca's observations highlight the tension and foreboding present in the play as characters grapple with the consequences of their actions.
