Answer:If I may add to the answer below, an important case occurred in 1974--I believe it was the Superior Court. And it was won by Lovecraft, which Anne Amitay and Mary Sutherland opened in Yorkville, Toronto Ontario, in 1972; Anne still operates the store today, 40 years ago, making it easily the longest running sex store in Canada. At the heart of the case was whether they could sell phallic-shaped products, which were being promoted as sex/health aids. As mentioned, Lovecraft won the case and the rest is history.

Although the author of the first post may have sold products to many businesses, Lovecraft set the stage for the kinds of respectable stores/boutiques that operate all across North America today. I don't know of any other store before Lovecraft that was considered "respectable" and a place where people could go without hiding their identity; in its heyday, it was one of the top destinations for visitors from the US, including many TV/movie stars, singers and athletes.

Moreover, it was the first such store where female customers outnumbered males. Also, all of the staff were women at first (they are all women today) and then gay men comprised the male staff after a few years. (Afterward, straight men also worked there at times.) Lovecraft was and still is truly an all-inclusive environment, different from any "head shop" or "dirty magazine store" or similar type of business before it or that remained for several years after it began. Again, Lovecraft established the bar against which all other such stores would be compared even today.

Answer:I really do not know exactly but I can say that in 1968, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, I have opened a little store with sex magazines and a few sex toys. I worked hard and...a few years later, I was distributing sex toys to about 20 sex stores (franchises). A few years later, more that new 300 sex stores (opened from my company as independant or franchises) were used to buy from my company. I consider that I opened the very first sex store in Canada. In USA, one of my friend, Gene Wallace, opened in the same years a sex store. He was the very first in USA in adult sex stores. We both had problems with justice but....life is life...and now, today, it is legal and accepted by everybody. I opened the very first sex shop in Canada in the years 1968 and Gene Wallace did the samething in USA in the same period. After that start, competitors came...: BMS Enterprises, Ultra Love in BC, SLK in Ontario. (to name a few only) In USA: Topco or Doc Johnson Enterprises (and many small companies) I am no more in that business today in 2011. Gene passed away a few years ago but...the business goes on, of course...

Let me say also that I operated a business in France. After 2 years, Eros International was distributing to more that 3200 sex stores in France. All sex stores were buying from my branch in Paris on the name Eros Internationel Paris-Montreal.

In the years 1970, the Montreal Police was against that business. (I am thinking about the Montreal Police Dept.) We had to fight a lot in Court with Maïtre Jean-Claude Hébert (he is a well-known layer now---because of our case in Court).... In Canada Supreme Court, with 200,000$ spended, 8 years later, we lost the case.! Yes! We lost! (I lost!)

3 months later, it was legal everywhere in Canada....... We (I was) were just too early! lol

Today, nov. 22, 2011, it is legal and accepted everywhere in Canada and USA.
