The first Globe Theatre, built in 1599, burned down on June 29, 1613 during a performance of Shakespeare's King Henry VIII (also known as "All Is True"). A cannon, fired as a special effect, shot a piece of flaming wadding into the thatched roof, which then caught fire. Despite the fact that thousands of people were crammed into a burning building with only one door, everyone got out safely. It's reported that one man's trousers caught fire, but someone else put the fire out with a beer.
