Shylock was the victim of prejudice because he was Jewish and because he loaned money on interest for a living.

Prejudice arose against the Jews because they had not converted to Christianity and because the early Christians found it was more politically correct to blame the Jews than the Romans for Jesus' death.

Jews were forbidden to hold many regular jobs in the Europe of the day (and were in fact expelled from many communities), but they were allowed to lend money as this was a job Christians were forbidden. The Christians both forced them into the job and held them in contempt for it. The Jews' position was not unlike the Pariahs in India who were only allowed to deal with dead bodies (a necessary task) but were considered untouchable because of it
