Socrates' way of teaching was to keep asking questions on and on and so you continuously tear of layers of belief until you can't anymore and that is the truth.

But the Greek senate wasn't so happy with being asked annoying questions and being outsmarted kinda like modern day politicians so they gave him a choice.

He could publicly say he was sorry and stop being annoying or he could choose to take a cup of poison and hence death. He choose the cup of poison because lying was the biggest evil in his philosophy. So he'd rather die than say he was sorry.
