Galen developed the theory of the four humors by building upon the teachings of Hippocrates and other ancient Greek physicians. He believed that the body's health and temperament were influenced by the balance of four bodily fluids—blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. Galen's work furthered the understanding of medical theory during the ancient Roman Empire and the Middle Ages.
Aristotle came up with the theory of the four elements in the world needing to be in balance. Hippocrates based his theory of Four humours in a sinilar vein, linking illness to the four seasons.
The Greek philosopher who proposed the theory of humours affecting physical and psychological health was Hippocrates. He believed that an imbalance of four bodily fluids (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) could result in illness and disease.

The four humours in ancient medicine are blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. It was believed that an individual's personality was influenced by the balance of these humours in their body. For example, an excess of blood was associated with a sanguine personality (cheerful and optimistic), while an excess of black bile was linked to a melancholic personality (pessimistic and irritable).
