Prince Albert had progressive and relative liberal ideas for his times, he campaigned against slavery and was a supporter of moves to prevent child labour.

Unlike many other wealthy landowners of the time, Prince Albert, who was Queen Victoria's husband, supported moves to increase the permissible age for working. This was one of the first steps to prevent child labour.

His concern in this matter is seen from the fact that he invited the Earl of Shaftesbury to Buckingham Palace to discuss this problem, and the required amendments to the Factory Act, which in future would allow children only to be employed from 6 am to 6 pm in summer and 7 am to 7 pm in winter.
