Bodhidharma is a legendary figure believed to be the founder of Chan (Zen) Buddhism. He is known for bringing Buddhist teachings from India to China and for his emphasis on meditation practice. Bodhidharma is often depicted with a beard and wide eyes in traditional Chinese art.
