The reason is the following: sphigmos means pulse in Greek; therefore sphigmomanómeter means the measurement of the pulse; in fact the concept of blood pressure appeared much later; the name has persisted despite the fact that is wrong in its designation. He probably measured the blood pressure with the finger. A more reliable measurement of blood pressure was done by the Russian physician Korotkoff. Samuel Von Basch was the personal physician of Maximilian of Mexico and took his corpse back to Austria after his execution. He wrote the book Erinnerung aus Mexiko (Memories from Mexico).
