Very uncommonly in bogs and wetlands (mostly a Southern tree). A botany professor at West Virginia University told me he has looked for it for years in both PA and WV and has never found it. I would be skeptical of most people who claim to know its whereabouts.

Does Poison Sumac grow in Southern California?

Poison sumac (Toxicodendron vernix) typically does not grow in Southern California, as it is usually found in wetter, more humid regions, primarily in the northeastern United States and parts of Canada. In California, the more common poisonous plants are poison oak and poison ivy. While poison sumac prefers swampy areas, the climate in Southern California is generally too dry for it to thrive.
