Gardening can be a most relaxing and rewarding hobby, that can be as involved as or simple as you need it to be. Since you are in charge, it will be at your discretion what plants you choose for your garden.

If you are a first time gardener, you may wish to keep it simple and grow a few tried and true plants to give you a sense of accomplishment. A mix of perennials and annuals will anchor the smallest plot with life and color. Perennials are plants that will naturally re-grow the next season and for many to come. Annuals are typically colorful bloomers that last only one growing season. If you find some you love, be sure to write the names down so you can grow them another time!

Some easy-care plants to try are the Plantain Lily, AKA Hosta. Hostas are pleasant, leafy mounds with great size potential. Functioning well in shady areas, this perennial will also delight the eye in sunny spots, especially when the tall spiked flowers open mid-summer. With large leaves ranging in shades of variegated green and white to delicate lime green, the bell shaped flowers are generally lavender, though some types bloom a creamy white.

For truly carefree gardening, choose a Sedum such as Autumn Joy. These hardy plants are just as happy in good or poor soil. Requiring little more than occasional watering where the rain is in short supply, they will bloom late-season. Wide circlets of multiple tiny blossoms turn from green, to lavender to deep pink as they age. Sedum is also a perennial.

An annual that will present you with cascades of bright flowers is the Nasturtium. The Alaska Mix is a riotous blend of Oranges, reds and yellows of many intensities. The nod to Alaska is due to the fact that these pretty fluted flowers will keep presenting well into the cold weather. As a bonus, they are edible, adding a peppery snap to salads!

Hosta and Sedum should be available as small plants at most garden centers. Nasturtiums can be easily grown from seeds. Both new and experienced gardeners will enjoy these selections.
