Communism is completely useless and a country dumb enough to practice it today isvery desperate!

Advantages:
Everyone is treated equally, no racism, sexism etc...

No poverty and goods are shared equally

No-one would want more than each other because everyone has the same

Disadvantage's:
No choice

No incentive to work hard because everyone is doing the same as each other, this means people can't choose the vocation they want i.e to become a doctor, banker etc...

Sometimes lead to a Dictatorship

The drawbacks far outweigh the benefits of communism however the benefits would be as the ideology goes that everyone would be housed, clothed, fed and nobody would go without any basic need. Another benefit of communism is economic development can occur much more rapidly then it can in a capitalist state as there is no need to wait for the build up of capital however the drawbacks as I said far outweigh the benefits (Lack of free speech, Inefficiency, Totalitarianism etc..)

WIthout jumping into the the pros and cons of political systems in general the best way to answer this question is as follows:

Largely Asian cultures have tended to revolve around the family unit as a whole. The individual was secondary to the family unit. As such an individual's contribution was measured against the family as a whole. This lead to the strong reliance on "Honor" in most Asian cultures.

Communism, as a political system views the nation as a whole (much as function of fascism; rather then all belongs to the state for the good of the state, all belongs to the people for the good of the people... and the people happen to be the state...). This mentality in government may work better\be more acceptable in the region then conventional republics\democracies with government supplanting the role of the family.

From the origins of communism as an ideaolgy a region that had spent centuries in a pesant class\feudal\monarchy cycle communism may provide a structure that more readily eliminates those older structures.

With communism price controls may better structure prices to ensure local access to resources but due to the top down methodolgy inherit in the system may be more prone to corruption and poor visibility due to beurecratic process.

Communism, a relatively new structure in government, is adapting to the 21st century and appears to be integrating capitalism into it's operation. So far is has afforded rapid responses and quick adaptation but with questionable costs as seen from the international community.

Due to the totalitarian nature of communism it has largely kept China whole rather then splintering. Currently it is attempting to resolve both Taiwan and Tibet's existence. Besides those two issues China has had reasonable territorial stability since the Communist rebel Mao led a successful rebellion against the existing government.

There is a rather large difference in the flavors of communism ranging from the former USSR, China, and several south-east Asian regions but that is far outside the scope of the original question.
