The friendly understanding was formalised by the 1907 signing of the Anglo-Russian Entente, which created a Triple Entente between France, Russia and the United Kingdom.

The historical significance of this lies in its precedessor, the Entente cordiale, French for "cordial agreement", which refers to a series of April 1904 agreements between the French Republic and the United Kingdom, formally ending the thousand-year Anglo-French rivalry (which had already ended by the conclusion of the Napoleonic Wars).

The future significance of this lies in the counterbalancing effect it, together with agreements with Portugal, Japan and the U.S. among others, served to Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy's Triple Alliance of 1882. These two sides later more or less formed the Central and Allied Powers of World War I.

(It's not a very well-documented answer but hopefully will give a good overview.)
