How did Pol Pot seize control?

Saloth Sar, AKA Pol Pot, was the leader of the Khmer Rouge Communist Party and became the defacto leader when government control by the group was forcefully taken. He maintained his power through fear and force through a totalitarian Dictatorship that imposed radical agrarian socialism. He used forced relocations, collective farming, executions, forced labor, malnutrition, and withholding of medical care to keep the people weak and under his control.

Pol Pot, real name Sareth Sar, came from a wealthy Cambodian background and was educated in Paris. While in France, he became active in Communist groups. Upon Cambodiaâ??s independence, Pol Pot returned and joined the Khmer Peopleâ??s Revolutionary Party. A government crackdown on communists caused the group to move deep into the sparsely populated northern countryside where they were able to gain control. A natural leader, Pol Pot, was soon in control. Following Nixonâ??s covert Cambodian bombing campaign, the Khmer Rouge grew to the point where they controlled roughly three-quarters of Cambodiaâ??s territory. They began the shelling of Phnom Phen and claimed victory in April, 1975.

He and other communists took over. I always referred to it as the Khmer Communist Regime. Basically, they abolished all art and religion. they killed you for absurd reasons. My grandfather still shakes his head at them. You couldn't even have soft hands or glasses without being murdered. They smashed babies against tree stumps, turned a high school into an interrogation house and torturous prison.
