Federal elections are held every three years at the most. The senator keeps his/her seat for 6 years just to add to the confusion. Individual states have different laws for their own state elections. South Australia, for example, votes every four years, while Queensland holds its state elections every three years. Then there are local council elections about every 4 years. Voting is compulsory in Australia and run on a preferential system.
A normal term takes 4 years. Sometimes the Government may collapse in mid-term or elections are anticipated for some months for one reason or another.
