The 1870's were a dynamic time for the United States of America. The West was still fighting Indian wars and Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell were inventing.

Women's rights were the topics of change in many arenas. Women lawyers were first given the right to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court in this period and Susan B. Anthony illegally voted in a Presidential election. Both the Democrats and the Republicans were under pressure from women and neither was rushing to embrace the cause.

Economically, Republicans favored high tariffs to keep out foreign goods and rely on American industry and Democrats favored only enough tariffs to pay for their view of limited government.
