Is gun control a good thing?

I think there should be gun control because with out gun control people would be like using guns against each other, not cool. If i thought there shouldn't, than we would all be able to practice shooting and hunting, i have one point of veiw for each side :)

If there were gun control, then gun crime would go up, due to all the criminals getting their gun illegally.

Depends on the severity of control and on your individual point of view. Even the most fervent supporters of gun rights would agree that a modicum of control is acceptable, such as prohibiting violent felons and mentally ill from possessing guns. However, typically, gun control takes the form of expensive licensing, convoluted regulations, and poorly thought out, arbitrary decisions of bureaucrats. For a criminal it's wonderful. For a law-abiding citizen not so much.

If you are a criminal, strict gun laws enable you to rob, rape and kill people without ever having to worry about someone shooting you in self defense. You ignore the gun laws because you are, well, a criminal, and that is what criminals do. Ignoring gun laws lets you have all the guns you want with no restrictions.

If you're a normal law abiding citizen, gun control leaves you at the mercy of criminals who are either stronger than you or have guns.

Some people view gun control as a good thing based purely on emotional response. In their minds it boils down to "gun=bad, no gun=good" It is an oversimplification.

In the US there is also the Constitutional aspect to the gun control debate. The 2nd Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms from infringement. Excessive control is definitely infringement and therefore a violation of a US citizen's constitutional right.

If you are a criminal it's good. You know you will not be harmed while preying on the public.
