Generally speaking, most people define Imperialism negatively because it was the expropriation of land, resources, and often identity from indigenous peoples elsewhere on the globe. Imperialism certainly created benefits for the metropoles (e.g. the countries doing the imperialism), but gained those benefits by forcing the indigenous people to submit to oppressive rule.
