First let's put some foundation in place. This practice started from ancient times when men stopped worshipping the true God of heaven and started worshipping the sun, Moon and stars. In ancient Egypt the Pharoahs built pyramids for their bodies to be placed at death. The reason for these pyramids was that they believed it could convert their mortal physical bodies into godlike bodies. These pyramids were so designed that light from the sun is focused in a particular chamber or room. The sun would've then be used as the medium to convert these bodies to immortality. This practice has continued across all race and nationality where the sun is worshipped using different names and in different forms. Baal in The Bible, Appollo by the Greeks and many more.(check the internet). Note also that the Obelsik(even the one across from the Capitol) from ancient times was worshipped as the dwelling place of the sun-god. In the top of the dome in the Rotunda there is a painting entitled the "Appotheosis of Washington" which depicts the 1st president supposedly rising into glory. That area directly beneath the rotunda where the sun's rays are allowed to focus had religious and spiritual for sun worshippers, believing that bodies when placed in this area will be translated to a higher level. Although most of us so called christians know this the practice still continues. Do some research on the net you'll find it. Look up the Pantheon from ancient Rome that's where the rotunda started, where sacrifecs were made to many pagan gods whose altars were under the rotunda.
