Civilization may be defined as the point where humans stopped being hunter-gatherers, and began living in one place as a group, farming crops and domesticating animals for food, and forming trading relationships with other places.

Culture may be defined as a complex set of ideas, values, language and traditions peculiar to one group of people, which has come about through geographic location, climate, genetic traits, and its history (and conflict) with other cultures.

Conflict between different cultures has been a constant feature of history, arising from competition for land, food and other resources, as well as mistrust, fear and lack of understanding of each other. Another constant in all cultures is the belief in a creator, or god, to explain their existence and the universe around them.

Fundamentally, cultures have more similarities than differences. For example, a funeral ceremony in, say, England, and one in Ghana, West Africa, would look startlingly different to an outside observer, but their purpose is exactly the same: to honor the dead and celebrate their lives.
