The fall of communism in 1990 resulted in independence for the 16 nations which formerly made up the USSR, as well as for many other nations in eastern Europe which were formerly satellite states of the USSR. It also resulted in the breakup of Yugoslavia into 6 separate nations (which was violent in nature) and the breakup of Czechoslovakia into 2 nations (which happened peacefully). And it ended the Cold War.
