Well their wasn't really communism in the USSR (Soviet Russia) under the definition it was socialist hence USSR- Union Of The Soviet Socialist Republics. But Before the Russian revolution which put the Socialist government in place things weren't good. their were millions starving and millions out dying in WW1 which a majority of the people did not agree to fight in. But in the long run the Soviet Union did positively affect the lives of the people. In a 2000 poll of Russian citizens around 70-75% said they wished the USSR would be reinstalled. In modern day that number has fallen to around 50% (Mainly due to Vladimir Putin's increase in the standard of living in Russia) But after the USSR fell a lot of things that people could access like Education, Medicine etc.. were privatized before the USSR fell, you didn't have to pay for medicine or going to school or to a collage because the state paid for you. But after the USSR fell the majority of those programs fell and people were now required to pay for them which with a falling economy didn't work. In conclusion though the USSR increased the living standard in Russia, and the live expectancy raised 30-35%.
The government cut much of the finding to military industries, cutting many jobs. 1 in 5 Russian men worked in that industry, so rampant unemployment occurred. Their economy had been improving in 1999, and is still drastically improving today.
There will be 3 different aspects to consider for the living standard of the Russian people which are economic, social and politics.
