First, the Freemasons are a nationally-known fraternal organization, with a history of more than three hundred years. James Monroe and Andrew Jackson were Masons, and many sources say Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were too. 20th century presidents who were Masons include William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and Gerald Ford. Lyndon B. Johnson was initiated but completed only the first of the three Masonic degrees and thus was not a true member. And while Ronald Reagan never formally became a Mason, he was said to be an Honorary Member, and he participated in a number of events that were associated with the Grand Lodge of Washington DC. There is no evidence that Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama are Freemasons.

There have been forty-four presidents and only fifteen were Masons, so it is easier to name the ones which were. John Adams and Jefferson were the first non-masonic Presidents.
