Lots, because a train is heavy. A 500 gallon fuel tank is small.
BUT ... the amount of fuel used to move a ton of freight is roughly one quarter what it takes to move it by truck (and a tenth of what it takes to fly it).
In general it is cheaper to travel by train. It is much cheaper to fuel a train than it is a plane and this would account for some of the expense involved in flying.

Depends on the train type. Steam trains and diesel trains use chemical energy stored in their fuel (coal or diesel) to create mechanical energy. Electrical trains use, well, electricity.
