The orphan trains began in 1854 and continued until the 1929. Hundreds of trains transported approx. 250,000 children during that 75 year period from east coast cities to farming communities in search of stable homes. Before they ended, every state with the exception of Hawaii and Alaska had received at least one child from an orphan train. The youngest surviving rider therefore - if he/she rode as an infant - would be 82 as of 2011. Visit orphantrainbook.com for more info on this missing piece of American history.
