Both the 2 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line) and the 5 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) stop at Sterling Street.

I think your best option is to walk to the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station and get the Downtown (Brooklyn-bound) 5train there. It's a little less than a mile's walk from 59 Canal Street, but you won't have to make any transfers. You can just take the Downtown 5 directly from the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station to the Sterling Street Station.

Or, you could walk half a mile to the Canal Street Station on the 6 (of the 4-5-6), the J-Z (the brown line), and the N and Q (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line). You'd take the Downtown 6 one stop, from Canal Street to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, and transfer there to the Downtown 5.

If you really don't want to walk, you can take the Ftrain. It's about a 0.2 mile walk from 59 Canal Street to the East Broadway Station on the F train. But this option requires you to make two transfers. You'd need to take the Uptown Fto West 4th Street, and transfer there to the Uptown A-C-E(the blue line). Then you'd take the Uptown A-C-E to 34th Street-Penn Station, and transfer there to the Downtown 2train.

The address 59 Canal Street is between Allen and Orchard Streets. Allen Street is the next block west after Orchard, and Orchard is the next block east after Allen (I only mention this so you will know which way is east/west/north/south when walking to the station).

Walking directions to the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station: walk west on Canal Street until you get to the Bowery.

When you get to the Bowery, turn left, and walk south until you get to Worth Street. Since the streets in Lower Manhattan are so chaotic and crooked, it will sort of seem that the Bowery is veering west and turning into Worth Street.

Walk west on Worth Street until you get to Centre Street. Then make a left onto Centre, and follow Centre Street south until you get to the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station.

Walking directions to the Canal Street Station on the 6, J-Z, and N and Q: walk west on Canal Street until you get to the Canal Street Station. Very simple.

Walking directions to the East Broadway Station on the F train: walk east two and a half blocks to Essex/Rutgers Street (Rutgers Street becomes Essex Street at Canal Street). Turn right onto Rutgers, and walk one block south to the East Broadway Station (it's called the East Broadway Station, but it's actually located at the corner of Rutgers and Henry Streets, one block south of East Broadway).

How do you reach the Canal Street train station in Manhattan from 55-59 Chrystie Street?

There are actually three or four Canal Street Stations (two of the stations are connected to each other, so they can be considered to be one station). In order from west to east, there is the Canal Street Station on the 1 train (of the 1-2-3, the red line), at Varick Street, the Canal Street Station on the A-C-E (the blue line), at 6th Avenue, and the Canal Street Station on the Nand R trains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line), at Broadway, which is connected to the Canal Street Station on the 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) and the J-Z (the brown line), at Centre Street. All of these stations are west of 55-59 Chrystie Street, which is between Canal and Hester Streets. So the directions to all of them are the same: walk half a block south to Canal Street, and then walk west on Canal Street to the station.

What subway do you take from Penn Station to 435 Hudson Street?

You can take the Downtown 1 or 2 (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Canal Street (at Varick Street). You can also take the Downtown A-C-E (the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to Canal Street (at 6th Avenue, only one block east of the Canal Street Station on the 1 and 2trains).Or, you can take the Uptown 1-2-3 one stop, from 34th Street-Penn Station to 42nd Street-Times Square, and then transfer at Times Square to the Downtown N, R or Qtrains (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line) to Canal Street (at Broadway, a few blocks east of the Canal Street Station on the A-C-E).The 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) also stops at Canal Street, but you'd have to make two transfers to get to it from Penn Station, and the Canal Street Station on the 6 train is actually connected to the Canal Street Station on the N, R and Q trains. So you might as well just take the N, R or Q.
