The shortest railroad line in terms of distance is the "Shortest Railroad in the U.S." which connected the cities of Allenhurst and Deal in New Jersey. This line spanned just about 1.2 miles. It was primarily used to transport passengers between the two coastal towns. The line is no longer in operation, but it serves as a historical example of short-distance rail travel.

The Transcontinental Railroad began in San Francisco, California and ended in Council Bluff, Iowa. Three private railroad companies joined forces to make it happen. They were the Western Pacific Railroad, the Central Pacific Railroad of California and the Union Pacific Railroad Company.
