Jehovah's Witnesses are very concerned about the education of their children (as are other people). We claim to have the 'true religion'. We teach our children 'truth'; not what we consider the lies of other religions. We do not teach them about the religious fairy tales of Christmas & Santa; nor about the Easter bunny.

As they grow older, we do not teach them the fairy tales of Evolution. Rather we would critique it with them; the fallacies of evolution.

We would give consideration to some of the following matters in a serious way:

Fairy Tales like Cinderella; and Snow White, is about 'step-mothers'; being wicked, or turning out to be a witch. True there are some special problems inherent in stepfamily life; but do such stories portray a wholesome & accurate view of step-families?

We find that many children, when they grow up, have mentally slotted Bible characters -- with fairy tales and other fables; even reducing God as just another mythical character. We wonder if a constant obsession with telling children fairy tales; instead of reading them the abundant true Bible stories; if this has contributed to the spread of atheism.

When children are told some fairy tales; and they become afraid of the dark; parent have to leave a lamp lit, to get them to fall asleep. Is this the course of divine wisdom?

Do toads really cause warts? Or do viruses? Can witches really turn people into toads & frogs? Or can an ugly frog really be turned into a handsome prince when kissed by a princess. (Might Kermit the Frog on Sesame Street perhaps be a better portrayal of frogs?)

And what about 'they lived happily ever after'? Is that realistic?

So we try to monitor what our children read; and what we read to them. We have an abundant supply of Biblical wholesome Bible story books; tapes; and videos. Our children watch these over & over. It helps to secure their education in God's Holy Word. We do not subscribe to the modern philosophy of a child reading and observing (TV) whatever they want, thus permitting them to establish their own moral values. Instead we view this as allowing OTHERS to shape their values, and outlook on life.

But are we paranoid if someone reads such a make-believe story? Probably not, unless it was to the exclusion of spending an abundance of wholesome time with children, in more productive reading. Then we would certainly provide some spiritual guidance; and sound the trumpet warning that we will 'reap what we sow.' But we don't pry into the lives of what families do. Guidance is provide - - and we leave it at that.

A children's writer acknowledged this power by saying: "The truth of the matter is that children read with their whole hearts. They may ask at the beginning, 'Is it true?' Yet even if you say, 'No, it is just a story,' it is never just a story to them. It is a life to live, an entire and very real life to live."

Further emphasizing how much stories affect children, author Alice Dalgliesh observes: "Adults sometimes fail to recognize the very important point that books for little children often go over into action-the child draws, or dramatizes what is read to him, or incorporates it into his speech."
